Non-profit organization that wants to help narrow the “intention-action” gap by advocating for zero waste stores that minimize their product packaging and practice sustainable habits to help heal the oceans and coral reefs.
ISSUE: CORAL BLEACHING
Coral bleaching occurs when the corals get stressed and release zooxanthellae. When these algae are released, the corals lose their colors and look “bleach.” The corals also lose their main source of food which makes them weak and susceptible to diseases. With the right water conditions, the coral can recover. However, if this process takes too long the corals will die off.
OUR MISSION: HEALTHY REEFS
“We believe that healthy oceans start with the choice that we make on land. We want to encourage sustainable living habits through arts, education, and environmentally conscious consumerism in order to help conserve and grow our coral reefs.”
GOALS
1. Spread awareness on how “everyday” actions on land can affect the reefs in the oceans
2. Encourage individuals and communities to practice sustainable habits and living
3. Using art and education to spread interest on reefs and marine life
1. Zero waste stores 2. Arts, crafts and education 3. Volunteer hours, diver program supporting a good cause
INSPIRATION
PROPOSE ACTIONS:
1. ZERO WASTE KIOSK - modeled after “zero waste stores” - bring in your own containers, pay for the weight of just the item - items sold at kiosks: shampoos, soaps, etc. + profits earned goes to our diver program and community events
2. ART AND EDUCATION EVENT - interactive community project - art activities that promote the use of sustainable materials 3. DIVER PROGRAM - program that pays for scuba diving lessons/certificate in exchange for volunteer hours to: + data collection on coral reefs + help fragment and plant heat-resistant coral + clean up plastic and non-biodegradable materials in the sea
ADVERTISEMENT
These advertisements display photographs of bleached corals. The transparent tinted circles on top of the photo imitate the shape of the colon in our logo (RE:) and illustrate the natural hues of healthy and thriving corals.
RE: is the root prefix that connects these sustainable habits together. To reduce, reuse, repair, recycle, repurpose, and refuse. With conscious efforts these actions become everyday routines.
The word “color” is accented in green. This visual emphasis alludes to RE: Leaf Our Reef’s efforts to bring back color and vibrancy to our reefs.
Education and awareness are needed for thoughts to become actions. To reflect, respect, react, respond, recover, and reserve.

ART STATION
_Reuse old tin boxes or container lids to create dioramas _Create collages from old magazines and recycled papers, or repurpose old knick-knacks like spare buttons, single shoe laces or old magnets _Display these hand-crafted dioramas on a bookshelf or attach an old magnet on the back to create a new magnet for the fridge
COMMUNITY CORAL SCULPTURE
ART STATION
_Use paper cut-outs of coral fragments to write a reflection, pledge, interesting facts or draw a picture _Attach fragment to the community coral garden and add “color” back into the reefs

Reuse old tin boxes, food containers, lid caps, and other recyclable containers to create dioramas.
