What is sunRAYLIM?
My favorite flowers are sunflowers + “Ray” is another nickname for Rachel + My family name = sunRayLim
A possible persona, or an opportunity to create a personal brand? Honestly, there are just a ridiculous amount of people with the name Rachel, and quite a handful of Rachel Lims out in the world. And the URL for my legal name was quite pricey. Thus, sunRayLim.
about my design portfolio…
As Julie Andrews puts it, it's a collection of a few of my favorite things. A collage of my memories, experiences and the choices I make as a graphic designer. A lover of nature walking through a mindscape of schemas, an avid traveler seeking to envelop new inspirations, a silent storyteller communicating through brush strokes and light. There are quite a few puns scattered throughout my portfolio. But, what is life, if it doesn't have a bit of laughter?
It is a no-code website made from scratch with no previous knowledge of web design or coding (hopefully, I don’t get judged too hard for the mechanics and quality of my website ). It is not a perfect website and there are still a lot of improvements that could be made. But, through the process of fiddling, tinkering, and occasionally breaking a few things, I’ve learned a lot about my own design thinking and process.
Font CHoice for My logo...
Edited a version of Gugi, a Korean font. I learned my family's language later in life and one of the aspects of Hangul that I found interesting was the Eastern philosophy of how the vowels were formed and arranged. “ㆍ” represented the sky, “ㅡ” the earth, and “ㅣ” as humans. While, the original meaning of the letterforms does not translate with Latin letters. As a Korean-American this font is a funny amalgamation of both my cultural influences growing up. I also just liked the soft modern sci-fi quality of the font.
Why Sunflowers?
In our childhood home, there was this little dirt patch by one of the front windows that grew nothing. But, one day, what felt like out of nowhere, a sprout popped out from that lonely patch of dirt. Its stem grew taller and taller and an alien head sprouted from the top adorned with wide petals in my least favorite color from the Crayola box. It is a core childhood memory that has stuck with me since.
It may also just be because this flower holds a key ingredient in one of my favorite childhood treats. Sunflower seed covered in questionably low-quality chocolate with a thin candy-shell coating from the Asian market.
